Financial inclusion through credit linkage of self-help groups: A comparative study of seven lead banks in Bihar

Sumiran Kumar Rajak

Self-help Group model is an ambitious effort by Government of India as well as Government of Bihar to ensure rapid financial inclusion of rural masses. NABARD is playing a significant role in promoting formation of SHGs and their sustainability. Government of Bihar has also formed Bihar Rural Livelihood Promotion Society to supervise formation and sustainability of SHGs in the state. Seven lead banks namely, State Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India are also engaged in promoting credit-linkage of SHGs in a targeted manner. In terms of achieving target, the performance of Bank of Baroda has remained outstanding throughout study period of preceding six years. Performance of Canara Bank and Union Bank of India is unsatisfactory.
