Jharkhand, endowed with vast rural landscapes and a substantial agrarian population, holds significant potential for dairy development as a means to boost rural incomes, enhance nutritional security, and create sustainable livelihoods. Despite its potential, the dairy sector in Jharkhand faces multiple challenges, including low productivity of indigenous cattle breeds, inadequate access to quality feed and veterinary services, fragmented market linkages, and limited adoption of modern dairy practices. This study critically examines the opportunities, challenges, and strategic interventions needed to advance dairy development in the state. Opportunities lie in leveraging government schemes, improving breed quality through artificial insemination programs, fostering cooperative models, and integrating technology for better milk collection, processing, and distribution. Additionally, promoting value-added dairy products, strengthening cold chain infrastructure, and building farmer capacities through training can significantly boost productivity and profitability. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor access to institutional credit, and fluctuating market prices need targeted policy interventions. Strategies proposed include public-private partnerships, expansion of dairy cooperatives, digital integration for market transparency, and sustainable fodder management. By addressing structural bottlenecks and capitalizing on untapped resources, Jharkhand can position itself as a competitive dairy hub in eastern India, fostering socio-economic upliftment, reducing rural poverty, and contributing to the overall agricultural economy.
