A study on HR policy divergence in India’s banking sector: Mapping recruitment, appraisal, retention, and training across public and private institutions

Mahesh V Shitole and Vrushali M Shitole

The study in its focus on the hiring, evaluation, retention and training is a comparison of the HR processes followed by Indian banks. 385 employees of 60 bank branches in Odisha are selected on the basis of questionnaires and statistical analysis. The results indicate significant differences in the recruitment strategy followed with the private banks performing better than the public banks in respect to standardized approach and in the reach where it is based on advertisements. State bank has good ranking owing to merit system as opposed to public bank that values appointments. Compared with the public banks, the training and evaluation procedures tend to be more creative to the private banks, whereas the public banks have an edge regarding the retention of long-term employees. Two more age and experience comprise the demographic variables influencing the perception of the HR policies. Along with pointing out the need of cross-sectoral HR learning, the report proposes career progression models, frequent training, and adoption of technology as the solutions. The study fills a gap in the knowledge associated with the topic of Indian HRM and contributes to the development of knowledge in this field by allowing academics, the executive leadership of banks, and policymakers in the HR sector to operate as efficiently as possible in terms of employee training and HR efforts in the competitive, digitized banking sector.
