The rise and fall of NPAs in Indian banking: A critical analysis of RBI policies

Vivek Gupta, Vinny and Neha Bansal

Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) have been a critical challenge to the Indian banking system, with significant implications on the financial health of banks and the broader economy. This study critically examines the rise and subsequent decline of NPAs in Indian banking, focusing on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s policies till 2018. Using secondary data from RBI reports, bank statistics, and economic surveys, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of regulatory measures in managing NPAs. It also highlights the macroeconomic and sectoral factors that influenced the NPA trajectory.
